Are you a man struggling with..
- Stress & Burn Out
- Cocaine, Alcohol or Gambling Misuse
- Anxiety & Worry
- Depression & Low Mood
- Anger or Rage Issues
- Relationship Difficulties
- Life Transitions
- Isolation / Feelings of Loneliness
You’re not alone. As men we are twice more likely than women to struggle with addictions, to die of suicide, to be in prison or to be a victim of violent crime.
However, we are also less likely than women to want to get help. We often feel that we ‘should’ be tough, we ‘should’ have it all together for our families and ‘the world’ and we often struggle in silence.
We recognise the stigma, shame and discomfort of asking for help or not knowing where to start.
It needn’t be this way. We can help

In order to be that way, you need to be free from the shame and the internal pressures that come with having to ‘style things out’ when things get difficult.
The problem is that issues with drugs or alcohol, the stress of modern life, or anxieties about your performance get in the way, which makes you feel hopeless and / or alone.
We believe that it shouldn’t have to be that way. That it should be okay to ask for help and that you shouldn’t have to hit rock bottom before you can change.

Our Vision
Richard is a versatile and experienced addiction therapist. He is passionate about providing a service for clients that respects their freedom and individuality and is especially interested in creating an existential framework for people that struggle with harmful substance use.
Having worked at The Priory Hospital North London, Gladstones Clinic and his own private practice, he is experienced in supporting clients in both inpatient and outpatient settings. He is currently studying for his Doctorate in Existential Psychotherapy and has a PGDip in Addiction Psychology. Additional training includes: Integrative Harm Reduction Psychotherapy, Motivational Interviewing, ACT, Interpersonal Group Therapy, Brainspotting and CPD in Trauma & Dissociation, Trauma & Shame and Trauma & Depression.
Richard’s aim in founding The Practical Change Project is to help men recognise and engage in their own personal growth. Having trained and forged relationships with some of the leading names in the ‘alternative addiction’ space, he recognised that a paradigm shift is happening, where multiple paths to success can be present and old fashioned ‘stop now, forever’ programmes needn’t be the only treatment of choice for people. A versatile and experienced counsellor & coach, he’s passionate about providing a service for clients that respects their freedom, individuality and own criteria of change.

We use an integrated approach of Integrated Harm Reduction Psychotherapy (as trained by Dr. Andrew Tatarsky in New York) Existential Coaching & Philosophy and Third Wave Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.
We also adopt a strengths based, client centred and solution focused stance, enabling men to begin identifying existing resources to create a life of meaning that’s aligned with them as individuals. Our main focus is to have ethical conversations that demystify the therapy process and help men engage and have a positive experience that they can then build on, should they wish to move on to more longer term and deeper work.
